NORTHERN REGION RESULTS & STANDINGS

v Bay of Plenty, Sat 19th September, 1.00pm, Rotorua International Stadium

North Harbour 12, Bay of Plenty 0, HT score 9-0.

Point Scorers: R Lobb 4 Pen.

North Harbour ended the season on a winning note beating Bay of Plenty 12-0 at Rotorua International Stadium.

The cold drizzly conditions made handling difficult. In the first 20 minutes Bay Of Plenty had the dominant scrum and was more fierce in attack but the North Harbour defence stood firm.

Bay of Plenty missed one and then turned down several kickable opportunities at goal, opting for scrums and lineout’s but North Harbour were up to the challenge. Leading the way in defence were the locks Cameron Gentles and Captain Matt Graham, both doing a mountain of work in the tight and taking opposition lineout ball. Leading the tackle count again was Openside flanker Zac Judge, often making huge hits then turning up in cover defence.

A lack of discipline by Bay of Plenty cost them dearly with Richard Lobb’s radar boot kicking 3 penalty goals in the first half  to give North Harbour a 9-0 lead at the break.

The second half didn’t see the match resort to any great heights with both sides making errors. It was a scrappy game but the drizzly conditions made handling difficult.

Player of the match Ray Daniels box and tactical kicking from halfback was excellent and his general play in the wet weather was exceptional. He was always looking alert and dangerous when looking for breaks or running with ball in hand.

A further Richard Lobb penalty 6 minutes from the end put the score beyond Bay of Plenty’s reach. In the final few minutes North Harbour was ruthless in defence, keeping Bay of Plenty scoreless. Prominent in this area was Evan Marshall who put in a ton of work, Matt Graham and Cameron Gentles.

It wasn’t a pretty match but it was a well deserved victory to North Harbour.

And so ends the season, players of note throughout the season were Zac Judge, a fast and destructive Flanker who has a consistently highwork rate. He showed his class in every match he played. Theo Herman’s and Leigh Thompson completed a very mobile loose forward trio.

Lock Cameron Gentles game improved each week and he has a big future in the game and Captain Matt Graham looks as through he has a promising career ahead. Prop Evan Marshall played all 5 games and proved good support for James McLachlan. Hooker Willie Jacobsen also showed he is a player of the future. Unfortunately Jamie Cameron’s season was cut short with a shoulder injury in the match against Waikato but showed he is a player of promise.

Behind the forwards were Halfbacks Philip Tuigamala and Ray Daniels. The later showing his class in this match and proved that he is a player to watch out for. Philip Tuigamala also showed patches of what he is capable of.

1st Five Richard Lobb showed when he cameback from injury he is a quality rugby player who also has a bright future in the game.

The promise of backs Richard Mills and Philipee McConnell from previous years were further enhanced both having a good season.

James Mills season was interrupted by injury so we never saw him reach his full potential.

Lastly thanks to our loyal supporters who have turned up each week either at home or travelling away, the support is very much appreciated.

v Auckland, Sat 12th September, 12.15pm, North Harbour Stadium

North Harbour 3, Auckland 25, HT score 0-11.

Point Scorers: R Lobb Pen.

Auckland was simply too good for North Harbour.

Playing into the wind North Harbour had a reasonable first half with good periods on attack but failed to take the most of limited scoring opportunities they had.

Auckland scored just one try in the first half and North Harbour did well to hold Auckland to just 0-11 at half time.

North Harbour were disappointing conceeding a further 2 tries in the 2nd half. The 1st a charge down close to the North Harbour line, the 2nd Auckland took advantage of a huge hole in the North Harbour mid field to score a well taken try to take the final score to 3-25. Defensively North Harbour fell off to many tackles to win this match.

Captain Matt Graham put in a huge effort around the field but again Zac Judge was North Harbour's best player created good turn over ball and fearsome on defence. In the backs 1st five Richard Lobb was steady and replacement Philipee McConnell was impressive at fullback when he came on.

On a positive note the team are determined to end the season on a winning note next week against Bay Of Plenty.

v Counties Manukau, Sat 5th September, 1.00pm, Windsor Park

North Harbour 13, Counties Manukau 24, HT score 8-19.

Point Scorers: Matt Graham, Alyx Hodgeson Tries, Chris Winkes 1 Pen.

Defensive lapses on half time cost North Harbour dearly against Counties Manukau.

North Harbour could have been going into half time only 4 points down and with the wind at their backs confident they could grind out a victory, but right on half time North Harbour let Counties Manukau  in for soft try to trail 8-19.

Early in the game Counties applied the pressure and were rewarded with a try in the 10th minute then after a good period on attack North Harbour struck back with an excellent try of their own. From a 5 metre lineout the ball was well driven by the forwards and stand out forward Matt Graham crashed over for a well deserved try.

The 2nd half produced a fairly even contest with one try to each team. North Harbour’s try came from a charge down by Chris Winkes close to the Counties line then spun across the backline to put Alyx Hodgson in the corner. Several times the North Harbour backline showed good urgency and made clean breaks through the Counties defence. They had their chances in the 2nd half but handling errors and tackling let North Harbour down.

This was a much improved effort from North Harbour but the team will have to set up again against Auckland next weekend.

Replacement 1st Five Richard Lobb made a successful comeback from injury with his long ranging touch finders and good positional play.

There were positives in the set piece where man of the match Matt Graham had a very good aerial game in the lineout’s and kick-offs and again Zac Judge showed his huge potential by showing a massive work rate around the field.

v Waikato, Sat 29th August, 2.30pm, Fred Jones Park, Hamilton

North Harbour 3 Waikato 38, HT score 0-17.

Point Scorers: Chris Winkes Pen

North Harbour came crashing down to earth with a 3-38 thumping at the hands of Waikato at Fred Jones Park.

North Harbour dominated the first 10 minutes of the match but failed to  make the most of early opportunities while on attack, often taking wrong options or turning over ball close to the Waikato line.

Poor option taking, handling errors and turnovers cost North Harbour dearly, Waikato scored 2 slick tries through their backs to lead 0-15 at half time.

The team was confident at half time they could turn around a 15 point deficit, but North Harbour didn’t play smart rugby in the 2nd half and couldn’t find any rhythm or way through the Waikato defence.

Waikato played the game at a faster pace and North Harbour didn’t compete losing the ball into contact and turning the ball over in the ruck area. Waikato scored 2 more converted tries to win the game 3-38. This was a very disjointed performance from North Harbour and Waikato who played the more mature rugby thoroughly deserving their victory.

The score line reflects the game and there will need to be massive improvements if they are to register there second win of the season next week against Counties Manukau.

v Northland, Sat 22nd August, 1.00pm, Maungakaramea

North Harbour 25 Northland 5, HT score 22-0.

Point Scorers: Richard Mills, Metui Talilotu, Theo Hermans, Matt Graham Tries, Philipee McConnell Con,  Chris Winkes Pen

North Harbour made it a winning start to its campaign by beating Northland 25-5 in a fine, sunny day at the Mid Western RFC in Maungakaramea.

All of North Harbour tries came in the st half playing with the wind. The game was only 6 minutes old when North Harbour scored their first try. From a scrum 15 metres out the ball was spun through the backline and fullback Richard Mills timing his run perfectly resulting in the first try of the match.
North Harbour had a series of good attacks and again the ball was moved wide with great breaks by Philip Tuigamala and then Scott Siaki putting Metui Talilotu in the corner for a 10-0 lead.

Northland then had a series of attacks inside the North Harbour 22 but good defence by both forwards and backs resulted in Northland making errors which North Harbour capitalized on.
Zac Judge forced the turnover;  slipped the pass to Philip Tuigamala who then spun the ball wide to wing Aaron Doyle who made a good break down the left wing. He then fed inside to Richard Mills who found Theo Hermans out on the right wing to score North Harbours 3rd try. At this stage North Harbour was on a roll up 17-0 after 24 minutes and it wasn’t long before North Harbour had its bonus point. Philipee McConnell pounced on a loose ball and made a strong break up field, the North Harbour forward pack then had a series of runners hammering at the Northland line but it was outstanding lock Matt Graham who forced his way over for a well deserved try.

The 2nd half lost a bit of its pattern and structure; there were some good phase play and linking between the forwards and back but struggled to get any continuity. North Harbour was ruthless in defence often forcing Northland in errors through shear pressure. Prominent in this area was the loose forward trio of Zac Judge, Leigh Thompson and Theo Hermans. Zac Judge was especially outstanding in the breakdowns.

The only points of the second half for North Harbour was a 40 metre penalty goal by replacement 1st Five Chris Winkes.
Northland got a consolation try just before fulltime to make the full time score 25-5.

Player of the Day Matt Graham was outstanding in the lineout often taking opposition ball and also in defence putting in some huge hits.

Philip Tuigamala always looked alert and dangerous when looking for breaks or running with ball in hand,  Philipee McConnell controlled the game well at 1st Five.

Overall the coaching and management were very happy to get its first win of the season. Our second match will be against Waikato at Hamilton Old Boys RFC this Saturday.
