finished second in the Northern Region Under 18 competition. A number
of players have also shown enormous potential for higher representative
honours in the years to come.
North Harbour 27 - Waikato 25, HT score 6 - 20.
Point Scorers: W Whetton, L Thompson 2 Tries, R Lobb 2 Pen 3 Con.
Game Higlights
As
a result of some indifferent Harbour defence, Waikato ran in 3 tries (1
converted) and a penalty to Harbour's 2 penalties, to lead 20 - 6 at
half time. After concerted pressure early in the second half, Harbours
player of the day Leigh Thompson scored a converted try. Waikato
responded with an uncoverted try to lead 25-13. During the last quarter
the Harbour team raised it's level of committment and self belief.
Leigh Thompson scored his second try (converted) from a well worked
scrum move. William Whetton also scored 'wide out' and Richard Lobb
kicked a tremendous conversion into the wind for Harbour to take the
lead 27-25. In the last phases of the game, a number of Waikato forays
deep into Harbours territory where thwarted by Harbours gritty
aggresive defence.
North Harbour 13 - Northland 3, HT score 3 - 10.
Point Scorers: C Mackie Try, R Lobb 1 Con 2 Pen.
Game Highlights
Harbour
took until the 20th minute to penetrate the opposition half in trying,
wet underfoot conditions. Once Harbour settled down and began to play
to the conditions the forwards ably led by captain Leigh Thompson with
several powerful bursts, supported by player of the day William Whetton
and Travis Healy began to assert some authority. This led to a fine try
by 1st 5/8 Codie Mackie running strongly to the line after a forward
drive. This was to be the only try of a hard fought forward orientated
game. Richard Lobb contributed with a fine penalty and conversion to
give a half time lead of 10-3. The second half was to be a much
improved quality of game and Harbour made several strong runs to the
line coming up short on a number of occasions. Richard Lobb scored the
only points in the second half a penalty to give a final score of 13-3.
