2009 FIXTURES
v Auckland, Sat 12th September, 1.30pm, Windsor Park, ECB RFC
North Harbour 14, Auckland 19, HT score 8-16.
Point Scorers: Daniel Moke Try, Dan Richards 3 Pen.
The 'Challenge Cup' is known as the 'Battle of the Bridge'. The Auckland 85's used a tail wind to lead at half time 16-8. First 5/8 and ex Harbour number 10, Carl Smith played territory rugby for the first 40 minutes and just kept playing the ball into the corners. Unfortunately for Harbour mistakes crept into their game with lineout throws not hitting the target, not releasing the ball going to ground and some infringing not helping the cause. Those mistakes were punished by Auckland's sharp shooter Nick Williams kicking several penalties. Harbour replied with a penalty and try from Daniel Moke to give Harbour a sniff at half time and the positive edge of knowing that the tail wind could bring us home.
Harbour started the second half well applying huge pressure, two penalty goals from Dan Richards put Harbour within 5 points however Auckland's defence proved too strong and Harbour were unable to cross the line.
The Harbour boys show that they are still the second best team in the 85's programme with Waikato and Thames Valley behind. The positives of this years team was 16 new caps and the improvement from last years rankings.
v Tournament, Sat 5th & Sun 6th September, College Rifles RFC
v Auckland - North Harbour 6 Auckland 16
Point Scorers: D Richards, J Clark Pen.
With the loss against Auckland Harbour needed
to score 4 Tries against
v Thames Valley - North Harbour 27, Thames Valley 7
Point Scorers: Rhys Finn, Donald Hendry, Mike Macdonald, Albertus Engelbrecht Tries, Dan Richards Con & Pen , Jeremy Clark Con.
v Waikato - North Harbour 3, Waikato 0.
Point Scorers: Dan Richards Pen.
Harbour needed to beat
Waikato with Waikato having had two wins on the Saturday. Harbour scored first
with a Dan Richards Pen just before half time , the second half saw the Mooloo’s
play the last 8 mins in Harbours half. A penalty was awarded to Waikato and a
draw was up for grabs, a draw being enough to put Waikato through to the final. There was an eireey hush over the crowd as Waikato's top goal kicker known as STEELO stepped up to take the kick however the kick just faded past the left hand up rights and the ball
booted into touch was enough to give Harbour the win and go on to face the Tournament favourites
v Auckland - North Harbour 3, Auckland 6, HT score 3-3.
Point Scorers: Dan Richards Pen.
Both Teams were up
for it and had plenty to play for. Harbour certainly played out of their skins and
it was only in the last 5 mins when
Auckland were awarded a penalty to take the lead 6 – 3. The Harbour Boys were camped on the
Aucklanders goal line, where there were plenty of chances for Harbour trying to milk
a penalty in front of the sticks to level the score but Auckland were just to
good in that area and the defence especially was brilliant . Harbour just kept
attacking / attacking / attacking and unfortunately a knock on by Harbour and the
This weekend is the Biggest Trophy up for grabs The Battle of the bridge known as The Challenge Cup, this has been going since 2001 so another chance against the mighty Blue and White‘s to be played at Windsor Park this Saturday 12th Sept, kick off at 1.30pm.
v Waikato (Harlequins), Sat 29th August, 12.30pm, Fred Jones Park, Hamilton
North Harbour 32 Waikato 6, HT score 27-6.
Point Scorers: Adam Bibbie, Ranna Peakman, Alan Zaharia, Bronson Rameka, Albertus Engelbrecht Tries, Dan Richard 2 Con, 1 Pen.
Harbour 85's retain the Predator Cup over Waikato. This cup has been going since 2005 and Waikato were certainly there to spoil the bus trip home. Harbour were to strong across the park which took the half time score out to 27-6. The second half saw the Harbour coaches use the bench and give every body a trott before this weekends NZ Barbarians Middle Weight Rugby Tournament. The coaches were very impressed with the teams defence. Harbour 85's go into this weekends tournament as 3rd seeds behind Auckland and Waikato. The words from the Coaches - improvement is needed from last years result - how good is this 2009 team?
v Thames Valley, 2.00pm, Windsor Park, ECB RFC
North Harbour 44 Thames Valley 12, HT score 18-7.
Point Scorers: Rhys Finn (2), Daniel Moke, Carlos Rameka, James Keene, Jeremy Clark Tries, Jeremy Clark 3 Con, Dan Richards 1 Con, 2 Pen.
The Harbour 85's had 16 new caps to wear the Harbour jersey and to win on their debut is something special.
The teams main focus is the NZ Barbarians 20/20 Rugby tournament to be held at the College Rifles RFC on the 5th & 6th September, from there the NZ Barbarians will be selecting their own NZ Barbarians Middle Weight Rugby team for some fixtures in 2010.
Congratulations to the following players who have been named in the 2009 North Harbour Under 85kg team.
