North Harbour Rugby Union Mourns the Passing of Dr. John Mayhew

It is with deep sadness that the Mayhew family have advised us of the passing of Dr. John “Doc” Mayhew (ONZM). He peacefully passed away this afternoon, surrounded by loved ones, following recent heart complications. A cherished member of our rugby family and a distinguished figure in New Zealand's rugby community. Our deepest sympathies are with his family during this difficult time.

Dr. Mayhew's association with North Harbour Rugby began in 1985, serving as the union's doctor since its inception. His unwavering commitment and medical expertise were instrumental in the health and performance of our players. In recognition of his invaluable contributions, Dr. Mayhew was honoured as a Life Member of NHRU in 2015.

Beyond North Harbour, Dr. Mayhew's impact on New Zealand rugby was profound. He served as the All Blacks' team doctor from 1988 to 2004, attending 131 tests and over 200 matches. His dedication extended to roles with the Blues and the New Zealand Warriors, showcasing his versatility and commitment to sports medicine.

Dr. Mayhew's passion for rugby was deeply rooted in the community. A Life Member and Centurion of the Northcote Rugby Club, he played nearly 200 games for the club and was a stalwart supporter both on and off the field.

In 2016, Dr. Mayhew was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to sports medicine, reflecting his significant contributions to the field.

Adrian Donald, CEO of NHRU, expressed the collective grief of the organization:

"John’s passing is a devastating loss to North Harbour Rugby and the wider rugby community. His contribution was significant and touched many people within the game. He is a valued and respected rugby man, and a great Harbour Man. Our thoughts are with his family as we remember a remarkable man who gave so much to the game."

Dr. Mayhew's legacy will forever be woven into the fabric of North Harbour Rugby and New Zealand's rugby history. His passion, dedication, and unwavering support have left an enduring impact that will be remembered by all who had the privilege to know him.
